In the photo above, Betty is at the Plaza de La Independencia in the heart of colonial Quito, known as "old town". On top of the hill in the background is the huge statue of the Virgin of Quito on top of "El Panecillo". As part of our Spanish school program we spent a week in the Amazon basin jungle at Anaconda Island on the Rio Napo in eastern Ecuador (Oriente) below the Andes mountains. The Rio Napo is a major tributary of the Amazon river. We took a five hour bus ride from Quito to Tena and then another two hour bus ride to Ahuano on the Rio Napo and then a canoe ride to Anaconda Island where we stayed for a week of exploring the jungle and learning Spanish.
